Update from the Captain

Congratulations to our elite juniors who have been selected in the NSW High Performance Squad – June Song, Grace Kim, Jye Pickin and Chris Fan. Well done to these players, a terrific achievement.

Well done also to our Golf Operations Manager Hayley McNeill who won the Division 1 Major Pennant for The Australian Golf Club last weekend. It was back to back victories for the Club. Team Captain Hayley playing at #1 easily accounted for her opponent winning the match 7/5.

Our Interclub Team started their campaign last Sunday morning and had a narrow win over Cromer out at Bonnie Doon Golf Club. We had a few debutants, namely Jason Fong, Dean Maher and Allan Wilson. See the Golf Operations report for team Captain Richard Wallace’s account of proceedings.

Rob Biddle continues to present the course in a fabulous state, we are all enjoying the firm greens. The scoring averages are reflective of the tougher conditions!

We are playing an unusual course set up next Monday, with the use of Gold tees for all Ladies and Yellow tees for all Men. We will have the 2nd hole out of play due to maintenance on Monday, and then from Friday, 14 May until Tuesday, 18 May the 13th hole will be out of play due to the preparations for David and Mark’s function on the Saturday.

Hayley has been working with Golf NSW to enable handicapping for temporary course set ups. Unfortunately, Golf NSW have recently made the decision to only allow clubs to have a single temporary course established for each gender, meaning the tee options offered to Members over next weekend will be limited. During the time the 13th hole is closed, women will only be able to be handicapped from the red markers, and men can only be handicapped from the white tee markers. If you wish to play in the competition during this time from the yellow or gold tees, your round will not contribute to your handicap calculations.

We are experiencing a significant increase in course utilisation. For the first quarter of this year, competition rounds are up by 40% on the same period in 2018. Whilst it’s great to see so many Members enjoying golf, the additional play is having an impact on the course condition. The Match Committee are currently discussing the possibility of moving to preferred lies and introducing areas of GUR much earlier this winter to better manage the course wear.

In the meantime, please take care in repairing your divots. Please do not overfill the divots with sand, just a little is all that’s required. Please do not spread excess sand over the area that surrounds your divot, it’s counter-productive! Please be considerate of your fellow Members when raking the bunkers too!
