Board Update – August

The Board held its monthly meeting on Wednesday 26th August, 2020.

Here are some key discussion topics from the meeting and other activities this week.

Mark Paterson – Honorary Membership
Members will already have read in a separate email that the Board decided at its meeting that Mark Paterson would become an Honorary Member of Avondale.  We were really thrilled to be able to recognise Mark’s contribution to Avondale for over 32 years in this way.

Financial Update
We have now completed the financial year for the club, and the unaudited results indicate we have finished in a good position.  This has been supported by our access to JobKeeper for a period of time.  More broadly, the Board and management have been focused on cost control in the current uncertain environment, whilst attempting to ensure we continue to invest in the club and course, in particular, for the future.  Warren will be communicating in more detail over the coming months regarding the detail of the year end results.

Weekly Playing Schedule, Course Congestion & New Members
Mark and the Match Committee continue to monitor playing patterns throughout the week.  There is some evidence of easing around demand for golf, although we all continue to play more golf during the COVID pandemic than would have been the case previously.  We also continue to attract new members to the club and the Board remain focused on ensuring this does not create additional short term issues for members, whilst ensuring a longer term sustainable membership base for the club.

The new weekly playing schedule as part of the membership category implementation has now come into effect.  The aim will be to reduce the need for timesheets and the random draw as soon as reasonably possible.  Wednesday is now back to our traditional roll up start and we hope we can extend this onto other days.

The course itself has held up incredibly well through the dual challenges of a very wet winter and high course traffic.  I’m sure everyone is enjoying the greens, which are in superb condition.

Cart Fleet Replacement
The Board approved the replacement of our fleet with Club Car Tempo carts.  The existing fleet is coming up to 4 years old and is typically changed out at this time.  The size of the fleet will be increased from 16 to 20 carts.  Thanks to all those members who have provided feedback over the last month or so as we have been trying various different options.

7th Hut Refurbishment
Tim is close to finalising a 2nd quote for a refurbishment of the hut at the 7th tee.  We will progress this as soon as we have agreed a final price and a supplier for the work.

House Committee
Bistro 26 has got off to a great start over the last several weeks, opening for dinner on Fridays and lunch on Sundays.  Sunday lunch is proving to be very popular – we are already fully booked for this coming Sunday August 30th.   As I noted last month, we are close to finalising our plans for some finishing touches to parts of the clubhouse.  We are working with Sally Taylor, the interior designer, to confirm costings, and Warren will then be in touch with further communication, including a video with Sally, explaining the changes.

See you all around the club and on the course soon,

Kerry Skellern
President
