Update from the Captain – Friday 24 July

There has been a noticeable easing of congestion in recent weeks. Unfortunately the health crisis is still impacting the way golf can be played and it’s in everyone’s interests to continue observing social distancing and other COVID-safe practices at Avondale. Thank you for your continued understanding and patience with our amended Golf Operations Conditions and booking procedures.

The Match Committee met this week to discuss a range of topics around the current Golf Operations. I would like to confirm the following amendments which will take effect for golf from August 1.

  • The current restrictions regarding the number of competition rounds per week will be removed. That is, Members can play at any time of the week in accordance with their playing category.
  • Monday Men’s competition golf can be booked in groups of 4. Ladies will continue booking a maximum of 2, as per the Lady Captain’s preference. Booking limits for the other days will remain unchanged. (Maximum 2 persons at a time except Wednesdays and Sunday where a group of 4 can be booked.)
  • The random draw booking process will continue to be used for all golf up to 2pm each day. From 2pm, Members will be able to access the course on a roll up start basis, by registering with the Pro Shop.
  • Commencing August 5, Wednesday golf will be a Medley competition from 8am until 12:45pm. Members may elect to play social golf during these times as well. From 12:45pm golf will be social play only.
  • The first tee time each day will be 6:45am, except for Mondays (7am) and Wednesdays (8am). The Pro Shop will open 15 minutes prior to the first tee time of the day.
  • The current scorecard procedures will remain unchanged. That is, each player will mark their own cards and, upon verbal confirmation with their playing partner, they will sign both the player and marker lines before scanning their own cards for processing.
  • Commencing August 7, a new Men’s Friday competition will run from 11am until 1pm. Please check the programme guide for details of the weekly competition format.
  • The Local Rules relating to the bunkers and flagstick will remain unchanged.
  • Visitors are not permitted to play golf, unless approved by the Captain in line with a current membership application.

A copy of the Temporary Local Rules is available here.

A copy of the updated Golf Operations Conditions is available here.

The Men’s August Medal will run on one day only, Saturday August 1. A two-tee start will be in use and the time sheet will open on Monday July 27.

Effective Sunday August 9, Members who wish to attend the Club for golf followed by Sunday lunch will have a priority booking window for golf from 8am until 9:30am. Please email me in advance of the opening of the Sunday timesheet with details of your request.

As outlined in previous communications, the practice range is being utilised at unprecedented levels. Unfortunately many balls are being hit towards the 1st and 10th fairways, posing a danger to players. This has become more prevalent recently. The club is investigating new netting to increase safety. May I ask all Members to align their practice shots to the flags on the range, adhere to the 175m maximum shot length and be conscious of the danger to fellow Members.

As always, please feel free to contact me via email with any feedback or matters that you wish to discuss.
