Dear Emily,

From the Avondale Ex-Services Committee

ANZAC Day is one of Australia's most important national occasions. 2024 marks the 109th anniversary of first major action of Australian forces in World War One. ANZAC Day honours the courage and sacrifice of those who fought and died in all Australian military operations. It is not a celebration of war, but a day of pride and identity for all Australians.

Our annual ANZAC Day service will be held at the Club next Tuesday 25th April at 7.00am prior to the shotgun start at 7.30am.

This year there will be a second service at 12 noon prior to the shotgun start at 12.30pm.

All Avondale Members are welcome to be present at either service, even if not playing

A Gunfire breakfast will be served from 6.15am consisting of a bacon and egg roll or a chive scrambled egg and smoked salmon wrap. The cost for this is $10 and includes a tea or a barista made coffee.

Complimentary ANZAC biscuits and a tot of rum are available to all (to really improve scores in the competition!).

The Avondale ANZAC Cup is a prestigious trophy on our club's calendar and I am sure we will see an enthusiastic competition on the day.

Expressions of Interest - Board and Committee Roles & Information

As we look towards the back half of this year and further to 2025, the Board is seeking expressions of interest from any Members who may be interested in finding out more about roles on the Board or the various Committees we have at Avondale. If you have an interest or would like more information, please email our General Manager at gm@avondalegolfclub.com.au or call the Club to speak to Aaron directly to discuss further.

From the Course

As mentioned in last weeks Avondale Mail, we will be having a "Poa hole of the week". We will designate a hole where we will place white buckets at the tee for members to collect and pull out any Poa plants that they see for the remainder of that hole. Once having putted out on the green there will be 2 bins located at the green end to dispose of Poa plants and also dispose of the empty bucket. A new hole will be chosen each Thursday. Hand weeding Poa is part of our Integrated Pest Management program, and will assist the chemical spraying in keeping Poa to a manageable level.

We have applied a herbicide to all of our greens last week for the control of Couch creeping into the bentgrass. This is an ongoing issue, where we have to manage the Couch growing into the bentgrass and also the bentgrass growing into the Couch. A 2nd application of this herbicide will be made next week which will further highlight and discolour the Couch. This treatment will be ongoing every year as we try and manage the interface of different turf species between our greens and surrounds.
