Course Committee Update

The Course Committee met last week. The Covid-19 matter has escalated since that meeting, and as members would expect, may have an impact on the timing and implementation of some of the initiatives under consideration. The following matters discussed may be of interest:

  1. The key strategic initiative of increasing our supply / storage of irrigation water was discussed in some detail. We continue to consider the two main options of waste water treatment or the potential to increase the capacity of the dam.
  2. The potential Course structural initiatives for 2020/21 were discussed. Potential projects noted were the fairway bunkers/ capillary concrete application, work on the Ex- Services Hut and some path redesigns. The Course Equipment budget is also being developed. As noted above, all potential projects and equipment orders will be reviewed in light of the current situation.
  3. Progress on the repair of bare patches on the course was discussed. Members will note that a considerable amount of turf has now been laid in these areas.
  4. The ordering of more indigenous plants was confirmed for planting near the 10th green / 11A, in front of the 1st tee, to the left of the 9th tee, in front of the 12th tee and around all of the new par 3 tee works.
  5. The rock face that was reshaped in front of the 15th tee for safety reasons was discussed. This is now considered to have settled and will be prepared for covering with wood chip mulch and later planting.
  6. The emergence of Wandering Jew in various areas of the course was noted. An eradication plan is in place and will continue to address this.
  7. The management of the rough through Autumn was discussed, with the aim of maintaining sufficient rough on the low sides of fairways to prevent excessive ball roll in winter.

Addendum
Since the meeting we have developed and implemented a plan to divide our course staff into two separate teams. The two teams are adopting segregation protocols that include starting, break and finish times. Equipment has been allocated to teams and all hard surfaces, equipment and tools are washed down to minimise the likelihood of contamination. Other contingency plans are being developed to ensure the course can be maintained to the greatest extent possible through the coming months. The course is in excellent condition and we will do whatever is possible to keep it at that level.
