Avondale Golf Club was founded in 1926 by the same benefactors who established Knox Grammar School and Pymble Ladies College. Since its establishment the Club has retained key traditions and character whilst embracing change to remain contemporary. Avondale offers a stunning golf course and a magnificent clubhouse nestled amongst the Ku-ring-gai bushland. The picturesque course, which is acclaimed as one of the best in New South Wales, is conveniently located a mere 20km north of the Sydney CBD. Whilst Avondale has a proud history and offers excellent facilities, it is the sense of community within the membership which makes it the golf club of choice for many on the North Shore.
Becoming a Member is your opportunity to share in the private facilities of Avondale and the ensuing benefits…
The original course designed by acclaimed architect and golfer Eric Apperly has been enhanced in recent years by designer Ross Watson. The work of these designers, including Avondale, feature in 14 of Australia’s Top 100 Golf courses*. The well established and secluded bushland layout offers a challenge to all levels of golfing skill and the course is recognised as one of the best in Sydney and Australia*.
The fairways are surfaced with immaculate Santa-Ana couch which, combined with the relatively level topography, make Avondale an enjoyable walking course. Greens are surfaced with G2 Bentgrass.
The Par 71 course measures 6,059 metres from the Blacktees. When the Black tees are in play, competitions are offered from shorter tees (Yellow & White) for those who find playing from the back tees a little too daunting.Avondale has the luxury of a spare hole which reduces member inconvenience when course work is necessary.
A significant water supply, via an on-site dam, combined with a modern irrigation system, provides the ability tomaximise turf condition whilst responsibly managing this precious resource.
To provide the best playing surfaces possible Avondale has invested significantly in state of the art course maintenance facilities and equipment. Environmental custodianship is a key focus and the course stewardship embraces the award winning E-Par environmental management systems. Avondale has been recognised for its environmental awareness through recognition as an Audubon Co-operative sanctuary and as a past recipient of the Claude Crockford environmental management award from the Australian Golf Course Superintendent’s Association.
Avondale’s playing membership is maintained at a conservative level to ensure all members have ample opportunity to play on the course. Since foundation, Avondale has operated without timesheets for most competitions. This rare benefit removes the worry of having to book weeks ahead and also allows members to meet and play with a wider range of their peers than at traditional timesheet based clubs.
Members are welcome to invite guests at the discretion of the General Manager to play in most weekday competitions and also in social playing times. Complimentary pull buggies and practice balls are provided for all Members. Avondale’s practice fairway offers turf and synthetic teeing areas whilst a large designated practice chipping green, putting green and practice bunkers are also available to fine-tune your short game.
Members enjoy reciprocal playing and visiting rights at several of Australia’s premier courses including Kingston Heath, Huntingdale, Lake Karrinyup, Royal Adelaide, The Grange, Royal Canberra and Royal Queensland to name a few. Reciprocal relationships are also established with clubs in New Zealand, Hong Kong, England, Scotland and South Africa. Mutual timeswap agreements also provide limited access to some of Sydney’s leading golf courses.
Avondale’s highly qualified and experienced Professional staff offer private tuition. Avondale’s programme also occasionally features golf fitness and group tuition sessions for members. A wide range of equipment and apparel is stocked in the Proshop and the Professional is an authorised club fitter for several leading brands. Subject to available space and a fee, members may also store their clubs in the Pro Shop and have them cleaned following each round.
A tree lined drive from Avon Road through the top end of the course leads to ample off street parking. The relaxed and inviting clubhouse provides the ideal setting to escape the hectic world outside and catch up with family, friends or associates. The members’ bar features an open timber fireplace and quality furnishings whilst the popular outside terrace overlooks the 13th tee and practice putting green.
With seating for up to 180 guests, the clubhouse offers an elegant environment in which to host private functions such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or other social or business events.
Well appointed locker rooms provide storage and full showering facilities.
Throughout the year the Avondale’s House Committee stages social events for members and their guests to enjoy. The most popular of these include summer evening BBQ’s, winter carvery dinners, reciprocal club visits andthemed nights. Casual dining is available on most days as well as a more formal Sunday á la carte menu.
The facilities and benefits previously outlined are a significant physical part of Avondale but it is these, together with the inclusive environment, proud history and strong future that combine to create such an attractive club.
Avondale offers excellent value for the membership investment and compares very favourably with other quality golf clubs in Sydney.
Attractive payment options are available for the entrance fee and annual subscription. Avondale is fortunate to have investment earnings to assist in the funding of major capital projects. Over the last decade this has allowed the Club to fund improvements to the course and the facilities without recourse to external borrowing or the imposition of levies on members. For membership enquiries or to arrange a time to visit the Club and tour the facilities please contact us:
